Nutrition 1 - This course is intended for all students, particularly those who desire to practice sound nutritional habits for health and longevity; pursue a career in food and/or nutritional related areas; pursue a career program in food service, medical assistant, practical nursing, and restaurant and hotel management. Students and parents should keep in mind that the food lab is a simulated work area and therefore students should conduct themselves accordingly.
Topics covered in class include: Safety & Sanitation, Identification of Equipment, Measuring Ingredients, MyPyramid vs. MyPlate, Nutrients: Carbohydrates, Lipids, & Protein
Nutrition 2 - We live in a very multicultural society and it is important for students to become aware of our nutritional differences and how they developed. This is also linked to various disease risks. Students modify regional and ethnic recipes for increased health benefits. Students will also complete an analysis on popular fad diets.
Topics covered in class include: Phytochemicals, Vitamins & Minerals, Digestion, Diets & Diseases, Eating Disorders, Health & Fitness
Child Development - This course examines the ongoing development of children from conception to preschool age. Students will explore the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social aspects of children throughout different age groups. Researching theorists and identifying sound parenting techniques is also included throughout the course. Students will have the chance to participate in the "Baby-Think-It-Over" project, which simulates what it would be like to care for a real life infant.
Topics covered in class include: Parent Responsibilities, Teen Parenting, Labor & Delivery, Caring for an Infant, Toddler Years, Preschool Years
Independent Living - This course is intended for all students preparing for life after high school. It is also a beneficial course particularly for those students who desire to practice sound financial habits for personal and financial security; pursue a career in business or financial related areas, and develop skills necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle within their means.
Topics covered in class include: Values, Needs, & Wants, Good Decision Making, Career Development, Savings, Paychecks, Living on a Budget, Transportation, Housing
